Union Ministers Receive Indian Ambassador

Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Than Swe and Union Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture U Tin Oo Lwin received Mr. Abhay Thakur, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, at the respective ministries on 6 September.

  • During the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs and Indian Ambassador, they cordially exchanged views on matters pertaining to the strengthening of the traditional friendly ties between the two countries and the furtherance of bilateral cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, including the ongoing connectivity projects and regional and international matters of common interest.
  • During the meeting between Union Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture and Indian Ambassador, they discussed enhancing cooperation in religious and cultural sectors. They agreed to strengthen collaboration in areas such as the exchange of scholars, with plans to annually send two postgraduate students from Myanmar’s Department of Archaeology and National Museum to study a diploma course at the Field School of Archaeology run by India. Additionally, two students will be accepted annually into a master’s programme in museum studies. In the field of Information Technology (IT) and Computer Science, two students from the Myanmar Institute of Information Technology (MIIT) will be selected each year to pursue a master’s degree in India. They also discussed the ongoing restoration work on the Bagan pagodas by the Archaeological Survey of India ASI, with a goal to complete the project by 2028 as initially planned. Furthermore, both sides shared open views on promoting pilgrimage tours.

Deputy Ministers, permanent secretary, directors-general and departmental officials also attended the meetings, it is reported.
