Editorial Review
An international news article highlighted that the online media are fuelling the situations of controversies and tensions in the world. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) expressed in its news release on 3 May that the online media, which cannot be regulated with rules and disciplines, are spreading fake news and propaganda, are politically triggering the social divisions and tensions around the globe. The news release also described that divisions are growing within democratic societies as a result of the social network media spreading fake news.
It also pointed out that appropriate legal frameworks should be adopted to protect the spread of fake news and misinformation. The fake news can be denoted as a lethal weapon. Although a bullet probably cannot hit a person, a fake news might even lead to the deaths of many people. For a specific instance, terrorists committing all kinds of sabotage acts destroyed a whole village for their attitude were against the former’s.
The news would be then instantly expressed on online or other media outlets. But the actual incident would be distorted as if the people, who conducted relief activities and attempted to distinguish the fire outbreak, become those who set the fire after the killings and arsons of the terrorists disappeared. Spreading such disinformation is not only once but repeatedly. Although the locals know the reality of the news, other foreign countries, those who accept the terrorists come to convince the fake news as the truth.
After convincing such fake news and disinformation, lives of the youths are gone in ruins. They are proud of themselves in holding arms and committing acts of sabotages. Though some know themselves they are on the wrong path, it would not be easy then to escape from such situation. Many families and youths happen to be in the agony of sorrows. While the manipulators and those who create such fake news are amusing with bulk of money, the youths are drowning in the dark fate with perilous future. Therefore, the ones who create the fake news and disinformation are actually the crueller killers than the murderers.
Myanmar is now on the course of democracy and all citizens already can enjoy the democratic rights. Moreover, people can already enjoy the rights of freedom to talk, write and stage non-violent demonstrations as per the democratic values. The rights must be the ones that are not against the laws protecting the individual interests and State’s security, rule of laws, community peace.
The protests and demonstrations emerging in the paradigm shift of Myanmar politics are now no more genuine and non-violent ones as it evolved into the violent attacks using arms against security forces followed by the acts of terrorism such as arson to factories and killings of people who do not meet their attitudes. In the attempts of local media relying on external elements and the foreign media agencies to fuel up such situation, the lives of the youths come to be in ruins.
Many negative incitements and instigations were backfired after attempting to conceal the unlawful acts of ballot riggings in 2020 general elections which was the actual root cause of what happen today. Like a Myanmar proverb, ‘The more patient is at the death’s door, the happier the practitioner who want money will be’, some foreign countries, assuming that they can enjoy benefits as long as a country encounter instabilities and unrests, are disseminating fake news and disinformation as a best destructive tool in their various sabotage attempts. The entire Myanmar population is disgusted by the fake news and disinformation spread by some foreign countries and do not want the situations in which lives of the youths are in the ruins as a result of such news and propaganda.
